Q: What are the benefits from feeding livestock with QWIK-GRO barley sprouts?

A: QWIK-GRO barley sprout growing systems will provide the following for you:

  • You can increase your livestock holding when you have a QWIK-GRO fresh barley sprout feeding system on your existing land.
  • QWIK-GRO manufactures systems from 280 Kg to 10,500 Kg/day outputs.
  • An increase in livestock weight gain in a predetermined feeding program for example:
    • Lambs increase in weight of up to 2.8 Kg/week over a 60 day cycle.
    • Weaned calves increase in weight of 2.0 Kg / day over a 100 day cycle.
    • Overall improvement in livestock health and wellbeing when fed with QWIK-GRO fresh barley sprouts.
    • Increased fertility when fed with QWIK-GRO fresh barley sprouts.
    • Increased milk and butter fat quality when fed with QWIK-GRO fresh barley sprouts.
    • Improved and 100% organic carcass when fed with QWIK-GRO fresh barley sprouts.
    • Marketing and selling timing will be in your hands and best prices can be achieved by you when you have a QWIK-GRO system.
    • The QWIK-GRO system will sustain you through the worst drought and keep you in full livestock production, 365 days of the year, notwithstanding the prevailing climate conditions.
    • No large land with pivot irrigation systems, pumps, large electricity bills, tractors & implements with large diesel bills, fertilizer etc. etc. QWIK-GRO is a complete feed farm in a single machine.
    • Minimised labour costs. One operator/labourer is required to produce 30 tons of QWIK-GRO sprouts per month.
    • Lambs start eating QWIK-GRO sprouts from as early as 7 days old, relieving much pressure on the ewe and causing lambs to be weaned much earlier than normal.

Q: What are QWIK-GRO aeroponic sprout growing systems?

A: Aeroponics is a fogging irrigation system where grasses are grown without a growing medium and without circulating and filtering overflow water as would be found in a hydroponic system.

It is housed in a totally enclosed environment where outside ambient temperatures can vary from -20°C to +50°C without affecting the growth output.

The systems have been optimised for applied space, are “walk in” (as opposed to “container” type units) to facilitate decontamination and maintenance procedures.

QWIK-GRO aeroponic sprout growing systems are fully automated controlled sprouting chambers.

Q: How does the QWIK-GRO aeroponic sprout growing systems work?

A: Barley seeds or any other varieties of grass fodder that can be grown and  include, but are not limited to, barley, wheat, rice, corn, oat, lucerne, rye, teff, lupine grass or whatever grass one wishes to grow, however barley grass seems to be the most economical with the highest nutritional value per growing cycle.

These seeds are placed into trays in a controlled manner according to the output design of the system.

The internal environment and irrigation is automatically controlled for growth and germination optimisation.

Q: How easy is it to operate and control the QWIK-GRO growing system?

A: The QWIK-GRO system is walk-in systems and is very simple to operate.

  • One operator / livestock feeder per 1.0 to 1.5 ton per day of output is required
  • Seed is placed in position and product is harvested every day
  • Trays are moved into position every day in “S” type systems.
  • Trays remain in position in “L” type systems
  • Internal environment and irrigation cycle is automatically controlled.
  • Cracking the husk by soaking seeds is part of the growing procedures
  • Periodic decontamination procedures need to be applied to avoid the formation of mould.

Q: Why do you use barley seeds to grow in your systems?

A: Barley seeds or any other varieties of grass fodder that can be grown and  include, but are not limited to, barley, wheat, rice, corn, oat, lucerne, rye, teff, lupine grass or whatever grass one wishes to grow, however barley grass seems to be the most economical with the highest nutritional value per growing cycle.

Q: Should fertilizers and growing enhancement chemicals be used to speed up growth?

A:  QWIK-GRO systems have been designed to produce hygienic, chemical, dirt and fertilizer free organic feed for livestock and only requires reasonable quality water.

Q: Which part of the grown sprouts do livestock eat?

A: Livestock consume the entire sprouted barley, including the root mass as well as some swollen and/or semi germinated seed resulting in complete waste free feed.

Q: How long does it take to sprout barley from seed to feed?

A: Barley sprouts grow from seed to feed in 7-8 days for most effective nutritional values.

Q: What animals eat QWIK-GRO barley sprouts?

A: All grazing and foraging animals like cattle, sheep, goats, horses, pigs, game, chickens and a number of other ruminants thrive on QWIK-GRO barley sprouts

Q: Can I feed my animals only on QWIK-GRO barley sprouts?

A: It is not advisable. Most ruminants require some roughage to brake the high digestion rate of the sprouts and to facilitate the maximum intake of its nutritional value. Additional dry concentrates are advised in a feedlot.

Q: What is the availability of barley seeds?

A: Barley seed growing is seasonal and widely grown for breweries. It is available from co-ops, grain traders and independent farmers, primarily in the Cape region where wheat is also produced.

Q: What is the price of barley seeds?

A: The price varies between R2450 and R3500 per ton depending on the growing season.

It is advisable to do your costings on about R3000 per ton as an average for good and bad seasonal supply.

Q: Can the QWIK-GRO barley systems be financed?

A: A number of financial institutions and finance houses are willing to finance the systems for approved buyers.

Q: What is the electricity and water consumption of a QWIK-GRO barley system?

A: A QWIK-GRO growing system will consume approximately 12 Kwhrs of electricity per ton of output per day.

Water consumption can be calculated at about 2.0 – 2.5 liters per Kg of output that your system is designed to produce.

Q: What is the nutritional value of QWIK-GRO barley sprouts?

A: QWIK-GRO barley sprouts are highly nutritious, packed with vitamins and minerals and highly digestible. See our laboratory analysis below.
